placed in a naturally funnel created by the confluence of the river
Tronto with the torrent Castellano. City rich of History, art and
tradition its imposed immediately in the eyes of the visitor for its

During the centuries, Ascoli got more rich by
always more new people: from the Sabini, to the Romans to the most
recent Frenchmen of Napoleon Bonaparte. Its ascribed to the Sabini
the origin of the toponym "Piceno". According to an antique
tradition, in fact, these people came to the Piceno, between the VII
and the VI centuries. before .Christ., conducted by a Woodpecker ("picus"),
holy bird to Mars, and they should be integrated with the native
people, giving origin to a new generation: the Piceni. They made of
Ascoli the greatest centre of reference to the entire population
diffused on the territory. After the Sabini succeed the Romans and
the events of Ascoli became those of the Roman Empire, in the good
and the bad. Plundered by the Goths, by the Longobardi and by the
troops of Frederick II, every time it was presented again as a
centre of a great civilization and vitality. Testimony of all that,
is offered to the visitor from the energy that shines through its
symbolic stone: the travertine. A snow-white and porous stone, with
its fascinating chromed colour, what is charming the appearance of a
great past. Its old town centre is a miracle of fascination and
harmony: the Roman ruins, the Roman churches, the architecture in
Gothic art up to the other testimonies of art Renaissance, Baroque
or cleric which made of Ascoli the City of the hundred towers" and
the "Tebe of Italy". The proposed route foresees a pleasant walk
among the artistic pleasures of the city. Starting from the elegant
but austere Piazza Arringo (or of the Arengo), on which overlook the
Cathedral and the Council Palace, we pass by the romantic and
fascinating Piazza del Popolo, where on the right side you’ll find
the Church of San Francesco, The lodge with 59 archs on three sides
of the square and the oblique of the elements of the facade from the
Captains of the People Building make a splash on the eye. The tour
follows up to the third fulcrum of the city: Piazza Ventidio Basso,
where you will find the benefits improved on the evangelist work of
the Padri Domenicani. Along the small streets, through the archs,
you reach the striking Via delle Stelle (Stars street), up to the
Ponte Romano(Roman Bridge). From there a walk along the bank of the
river Tronto before returning to the base Ascoli is not only art:
The gastronomy and its crafts reserve to the watchful and expert
tourist real pleasant surprises. |
